The printing press's revolutionary power lay partly in its multiplication of blank pages: suddenly, a thousand copies of emptiness awaited filling with knowledge. This concept celebrates the generative potential of unfilled space. A book's margins, a library's catalog space, a network's bandwidth—these emptinesses enable democratization. Without them, there's nowhere for new knowledge to go. In digital platforms, this translates to interface simplicity, open standards, and room for user-generated content. The concept opposes the maximalist impulse to fill every space with information. Instead, it suggests that platforms democratizing knowledge should maintain emptiness—breathing room where users can write, think, and create. This emptiness is not absence but pregnant potential, the Taoist womb from which new forms of understanding can emerge.
