Energy Sufficiency Over Optimization

Efficiency improvements have failed to reduce total energy consumption because optimization without definition of sufficiency creates infinite expansion. More efficient homes become larger. More efficient cars become more numerous. The missing piece is sufficiency: defining 'enough.' Laozi's uncarved block represents the state before unnecessary refinement. Applied to energy, this means establishing what genuine human flourishing requires—shelter from elements, nutrition, health, community—then designing technology to meet exactly that, no more. Modern technology culture lacks vocabulary for sufficiency; growth is assumed intrinsic to progress. Yet Taoist wisdom recognizes that beyond a threshold, more creates suffering, not benefit. A 2,000 square foot home per person provides comfort; adding another 2,000 provides complexity without corresponding wellbeing. Renewable energy that powers endless consumption isn't climate salvation; it's continuation of the same destructive paradigm with green branding. True climate technology begins by defining human sufficiency, then designs elegant systems to deliver precisely that—not more, not endlessly optimized, but simply enough.
