The Taoist conception of flow as water following the path of least resistance offers an alternative to complex algorithmic load balancing. Current systems use sophisticated software to continuously optimize workload distribution, consuming CPU cycles and energy in the optimization process itself. Laozi suggests that allowing workloads to distribute through simpler, more natural patterns—routing to geographically nearest resources, following existing network topology, preferring already-warm servers—often produces better results with minimal computation overhead. This isn't randomness but responsive simplicity: like water flowing around obstacles, workloads settle into patterns that minimize friction when given simple, local rules rather than global optimization algorithms. The energy saved by eliminating complex balancing overhead, reducing network optimization cycles, and allowing patterns to emerge naturally often exceeds the modest performance gains from sophisticated load distribution. This reflects wu wei: effective distribution through non-forcing principles.
