Why It Matters

Laozi teaches that the softest thing (water) overcomes the hardest (stone) through yielding and acceptance rather than resistance. Paradoxically, blockchains become most immovable by accepting constraints they cannot change. Bitcoin's protocol limitations—fixed block size, ten-minute intervals, script language boundaries—were once seen as flaws. They became sources of immense strength precisely because the network accepted them as unchangeable. When millions of nodes and miners committed to unchanging rules, those rules became mathematically immutable in practice. Projects that attempt to remain 'flexible' and 'upgradeable' inevitably face governance crises and hard forks. Bitcoin's apparent rigidity—its refusal to easily change—is the source of its credibility and security. The network that accepts it cannot be easily modified becomes the network attackers cannot control. This embodies wu wei: rather than constantly optimizing and improving, the network finds strength in stability and acceptance. Historical path-dependence, once seen as technical debt, becomes a feature: it means the network has deep roots and commitment. The most resilient decentralized systems are those that accept their constraints and stop trying to be all things to all people.
