The Invisible Hand and Algorithm Acceptance

Recognizing that platforms are designed to create anxiety reduces internal blame; accepting what cannot be changed preserves peace.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Taoism teaches accepting the unchangeable aspects of reality as part of the larger unfolding (Tao). Modern anxiety often comes from fighting facts: algorithms exist, they're designed for engagement, they will trigger FOMO. Laozi would counsel acceptance of this reality rather than internal struggle against it. This doesn't mean resignation but clear-eyed understanding. You cannot stop platforms from engineering addiction; fighting this at the psychological level exhausts you. Instead, acceptance creates leverage: once you fully acknowledge that anxiety is engineered, not a personal failure, you can respond strategically. You move toward active choices (less frequent access, curated feeds, accountability partners) rather than shame-driven resistance that amplifies the anxiety. This paradoxically gives you more power. By stopping the internal struggle with an unchangeable system, you free energy for what you can control: your relationship to the tools themselves.
