Jiating (家庭) - The Family as Living System

The family as an energetic body larger than any individual member, where past trauma and resilience circulate through relationships and choices.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Jiating transcends the Western notion of family as separate individuals and instead reveals it as a living system with its own flow, memory, and intelligence. In Taoist ecology, the family is an organism: ancestors form the roots, living members are the trunk and branches, and descendants are future growth. What one ancestor experienced shapes the nervous system of their great-grandchild, not through blame but through inherited pattern. Laozi's teaching on systems shows that when we understand jiating as a whole, we stop personalizing family dysfunction and instead see it as information to be understood and transformed. Recognizing oneself as a cell in this larger body dissolves both grandiosity and shame. The practice involves sensing the family field: What is the unspoken loyalty binding us? What roles do family members unconsciously play? By viewing jiating as a living system, we gain agency not as rebels but as conscious participants in healing ancestral patterns that affect us all.
