The Limits of Naming and Categorization

Recognizing how taxonomy and metadata systems reduce knowledge complexity, and designing platforms that honor unknowability alongside systematic access.

Why It Matters

Laozi begins the Tao Te Ching with a radical claim: 'The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao.' Naming—categorization, taxonomy, metadata—creates knowledge boundaries that simultaneously enable and constrain understanding. The printing press required standardization: standardized formats, fonts, page numbers, indices. These enabled access but also created the illusion that knowledge fit neatly into categories. Modern metadata systems intensify this: we tag content with subjects, keywords, and categories that supposedly organize knowledge but actually reduce its dimensionality. An approach honoring this paradox would design platforms that provide categorial access (necessary for discoverability) while explicitly marking its limitations. This means building systems that allow knowledge to exist in multiple, even contradictory categories; that surface ambiguity rather than resolving it; that acknowledge how naming obscures as much as it clarifies. It might mean using soft metadata that evolves with interpretation, or visualization systems that show knowledge as interconnected rather than categorical. It means creating space for what resists naming—the pre-verbal, the intuitive, the paradoxical. Such platforms wouldn't abandon organization but would maintain productive tension between systematic access and irreducible complexity. They'd honor both the utility of naming and the wisdom traditions that teach its ultimate inadequacy. This creates platforms where search finds what you're looking for while the interface whispers that true understanding exceeds all categories.
