The Naming Problem

How defining activist movements, platforms, and technologies too precisely constrains them; the power of strategic vagueness.

Laozi
Why It Matters

The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao. Movements that define themselves too precisely become targets; vagueness becomes protective. Many activist campaigns fail when they crystallize into fixed statements that opponents can target. Effective movements maintain strategic ambiguity about intentions, methods, and boundaries. A movement that says nothing specific remains impossible to suppress, while one that publishes detailed demands becomes a fixed target. Applied to technology: platforms that avoid specifying their exact architecture, governance model, or feature set remain harder to shut down than those making grand claims. This challenges activist culture's tendency toward transparent documentation and public accountability. Taoist strategy sometimes requires mystery. The most resilient activist networks operate without detailed manifestos, public member lists, or explicit hierarchies. Knowledge remains distributed; power relations stay implicit. This creates challenges for newcomers but prevents infiltration and suppression. For technology, this means some powerful tools remain relatively unknown, used only by communities who understand them, never hyped into mainstream attention. This isn't opacity about values—genuine activists remain transparent about core principles—but strategic vagueness about mechanisms. The naming problem also applies to resistance itself: naming a tactic perfectly allows opponents to prepare defenses. Effective activism maintains a portfolio of unnamed approaches that adversaries cannot anticipate.
