Current recycling achieves partial circularity; the Taoist vision demands completion. Metals extracted from earth circulate back to manufacturing; organic materials return to soil; water completes its cycle. This requires designing products and systems with return built in from conception: materials chosen for recyclability, products designed for disassembly, supply chains structured for material recovery and reuse. True returning demands that companies take responsibility for complete lifecycles, not just selling products then forgetting them. Extended producer responsibility becomes ethical imperative rather than regulatory burden. Rare earth elements extracted for technology must actually return to production streams rather than dispersing into landfills. Bioplastics genuinely biodegrade into soil, regenerating fertility. This contrasts sharply with linear models where materials flow outward and downward only. By designing systems that honor Laozi's teaching of returning to root, sustainable technology becomes restorative: each product's materials feed the next generation of making. Manufacturing becomes less extraction and more circulation, less taking from the earth and more dancing with natural flows of material, energy, and information that characterize living systems.
