Laozi saw through such artifice millennia before screens: continuity is illusion whether maintained by ego or algorithm. True memento mori must include releasing this technological clutching for immortality. The sage recognizes that attempting to ensure your digital ghost persists is another form of wu wei violation—forceful resistance to natural ending. Death means genuine discontinuity: your thoughts cease, your influence fades, your data becomes noise. This is not depressing but liberating when accepted. By relinquishing attachment to being remembered, leaving no digital legacy, or holding lightly to online identity, we practice the flexibility Laozi teaches. The Taoist memento mori asks: can you die in all senses, including ceasing to be remembered? That is freedom.
