An encrypted messaging app matters only when surveillance becomes visible; decentralized finance gains traction when trust in institutions fails; open-source platforms flourish when corporations overreach. The activist-technologist practices discernment about readiness—both technological readiness and social readiness. This means observing when a problem becomes urgent enough that people will adopt solutions, when technical barriers lower sufficiently, when cultural narratives shift. It's not about pushing technology onto movements before they need it, but recognizing the moment when technology and social demand align. This requires patience, deep listening to emerging grievances, and releasing attachment to particular solutions in favor of sensing what each moment requires.
