The Uncarved Block of Human Potential

Preserving human potential as flexible and undefined rather than optimizing it away through excessive specialization to AI tasks.

Why It Matters

Laozi uses the image of the uncarved block—potential in its raw state, undifferentiated, capable of becoming anything. Optimization necessarily carves the block: it shapes potential toward specific ends, reducing flexibility for other ends. In modern work, this danger is acute: as you specialize increasingly in using AI tools for specific tasks, you optimize yourself toward those specific patterns. You become excellent at prompt engineering but perhaps less capable of thinking without that mediation. You excel at delegating research to AI but perhaps diminish your own research capacity. Each optimization trades away other possibilities. The sage maintains the uncarved block—the undifferentiated potential to work multiple ways, solve problems through multiple approaches, think in multiple modes. This means occasionally refusing to optimize, choosing flexibility over efficiency, maintaining capabilities even when AI could replace them. A writer might use AI for certain tasks but refuse to let it replace all drafting, preserving the direct writing capacity. A researcher might delegate some searches but continue hands-on investigation, maintaining research intuition. This appears inefficient—you're maintaining skills you could have outsourced. But you're preserving the uncarved block, the full range of your potential. When circumstances change, when AI proves inadequate, when a problem requires approaches you optimized away, that preserved capacity becomes invaluable. Wisdom lies in choosing what not to optimize.
