The Unnamed Enhancement Path

Pursuing human enhancement without predetermined outcomes, allowing capabilities to emerge rather than forcing specific traits or traits.

Laozi
Why It Matters

The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao. This opening of the Daodejing warns against rigid categories and predefined destinations. Applied to enhancement, it challenges the assumption that we should engineer for specific traits—intelligence, strength, beauty, longevity. Instead, the Taoist approach asks: What if we enhanced resilience, adaptability, and learning capacity itself, letting individuals and communities discover what emerges? This inverts the typical biotech logic of targeting deficits or desired outcomes. Rather than designer babies optimized for predetermined lives, consider enhancement platforms that expand potential and let human agency determine expression. This reduces hubris, acknowledges our limited foresight, and respects the inherent creativity of living systems. It aligns with wu wei: provide the conditions for flourishing and release attachment to specific results. The enhanced human becomes a question mark rather than a predetermined answer.
