Historically, African communities have excelled at sustainable maintenance: vehicles kept running through ingenious improvisation, tools carefully tended across generations, knowledge passed through apprenticeship. The examined tool asks: does this technology support local maintenance capacity, or does it demand external expertise and create dependency? Design philosophy should favor simplicity, repairability, and the cultivation of local expertise. Wu wei maintenance resists the planned obsolescence model where manufacturers intentionally limit lifespan to force replacement. Instead, it envisions tools designed for longevity, repairability, and the possibility of upgrading components rather than discarding entire devices. This approach generates multiple benefits simultaneously: reduced strain on users, environmental sustainability, economic resilience, skill development within communities, and the preservation of dignity through self-sufficiency. Technology becomes truly examined when communities understand and can maintain what they adopt.
