Mirabai's devotion to Krishna functioned partially as a relationship with an internalized divine presence. This internal beloved offered comfort, guidance, and unconditional regard that she didn't fully receive from external relationships. While her longing for Krishna remained real and poignant, she also developed an intimate relationship with the divine within herself. Object relations psychology, aligned with bhakti wisdom, suggests that secure attachment depends on having internalized a 'good object'—an internal sense of being valued, understood, and secure. People with anxious attachment often lack this internal security and desperately seek external partners to provide it. Those with avoidant attachment may have internalized a rejecting figure. Through practices like meditation, self-compassion, journaling, and contemplative prayer, you can develop an internal relationship with your own deeper wisdom, your own divine nature. This internal security becomes the foundation for healthy partnering. You're no longer completely dependent on a partner to feel loved because you have contact with an internalized sense of unconditional regard. This paradoxically makes you a better partner because you're less desperate. You can love your partner for who they actually are rather than for what they provide psychologically. You can weather ruptures because your sense of worth isn't solely dependent on their attention. Mirabai's example shows that the most secure people develop rich internal lives where they genuinely commune with something larger than romantic relationships.
