Bhakti as Emotional Literacy

Bhakti—devotional practice—develops extraordinary emotional depth and literacy that becomes the foundation for discerning, authentic attraction.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's bhakti wasn't withdrawal from emotion but its fullest cultivation: she felt devotion, longing, grief, ecstasy, rebellion—deeply and without suppression. This emotional literacy became her wisdom. In attraction science, emotional intelligence—the ability to recognize, name, and work skillfully with emotional states—is foundational to healthy relationship choice. Bhakti teaches that attraction originates in emotional capacity: we attract people at our level of emotional development and are attracted to those who can mirror or elevate our emotional understanding. Mirabai's poems reveal someone who examined every nuance of love, from ecstatic union to devastating loss, and integrated it all into wisdom. This framework suggests that developing genuine bhakti—deep feeling practice, journaling, meditation on emotional states—is not separate from attraction wisdom but central to it. By becoming literate in our own emotional landscape, we become able to recognize authentic resonance, distinguish between addiction and love, and make conscious choices about whom we allow into our hearts and lives.
