Bhava: The Emotional State as Creative Portal

Bhava is the emotional state or mood that becomes the actual medium of creative work, inviting you to inhabit and express grief fully rather than transcend it.

Why It Matters

Bhava refers to the emotional state or mood-consciousness in bhakti—not passing emotion but a sustained inner environment. Mirabai cultivated different bhavas: madhura bhava (the sweetness of longing), vatsalya bhava (maternal tenderness), sakhya bhava (friendship with the divine). Rather than treating your grief as something to overcome and move past, bhava invites you to inhabit it as a creative landscape. When you're in deep grief-bhava, your perception, sensitivity, and access to unusual emotional truths are heightened. This state has its own intelligence and gifts. By entering your grief fully—not as wallowing but as intentional inhabitation—you gain access to creative material that surface-level wellbeing cannot touch. The work made from this place carries a particular resonance and depth. Bhava suggests that the goal is not to escape grief but to consciously dwell within it, allowing it to shape what you make until, through making, you gradually metabolize and integrate the loss.
