Community as Witness and Mirror

Mirabai did not keep her love private. She sang in temples, in streets, to anyone who would listen. Her community—first confused, then gradually moved—became witnesses to her transformation. This public devotion was not exhibitionism; it was an assertion that love is not shameful, that the examined heart deserves expression and witness. Community witnessed and, over time, understood. For autonomy and togetherness, this matters enormously. We need to be seen—truly seen—in our authenticity. We also need to see others. Community provides both mirror and witness. When we express our truth and are met with genuine presence (not judgment, not advice, but witnessing), we become more fully ourselves. Conversely, when we witness others' authenticity, we are reminded of our own capacity for truth. Mirabai's legacy is possible only because her songs were shared, preserved, and passed down. In modern practice, this might mean small groups, trusted friendships, or public expression. It means finding people who can witness your examined heart without trying to fix it or make you smaller. It means being willing to witness others. This kind of community prevents both the isolation of autonomy and the enmeshment of togetherness; it creates the third thing—belonging rooted in genuine presence and mutual seeing.
