Courage as Love's Requirement

The bhakti recognition that unconditional love requires tremendous courage to resist cultural pressure and prioritize the heart's truth.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai's devotion cost her marriage, status, family approval, and safety. She chose love knowing the price. This is not romantic suffering but clear-eyed courage—the willingness to be condemned, misunderstood, and alone rather than betray what she knew was true. For Agape, this concept is essential and often overlooked. Unconditional love across traditions requires the courage to love the refugee when your community calls them invader, to honor the other faith when yours claims monopoly on truth, to serve the enemy when your tribe demands loyalty only to itself. This courage is not recklessness but the disciplined bravery of the examined heart that has chosen love over approval. Traditions that celebrate their heroes' courage but punish their current members' courage have not understood Mirabai. The examined heart must ask: What am I willing to lose to love fully? What approval am I willing to forgo?
