The Courage to Feel

Mirabai's willingness to experience the full intensity of emotion without numbing or fleeing becomes an act of profound spiritual courage.

Why It Matters

In cultures that valorize control, composure, and transcendence of emotion, Mirabai's commitment to feeling seems reckless. Yet it is courageous. The rage underneath often stays underneath because we lack courage to feel it fully. We fear if we allow ourselves to feel the depth of our anger, we will be destroyed by it, or become someone we do not recognize. Mirabai's path teaches that the opposite is true: it is the avoidance of feeling that fragments us. Courage to feel means meeting anger without acting on every impulse it generates; it means grieving without losing ourselves in despair; it means remaining present to the intensity of emotion without either suppressing it or being swept away by it. This is not emotional indulgence but emotional courage. In the examined heart, we discover that our deepest fears often dissolve when we turn to face them directly. Mirabai's entire spiritual path rests on this courage—the willingness to feel everything fully in service of love.
