Devotion Beyond Doctrine

Mirabai loved Krishna with such intensity that institutional religion became irrelevant to her practice. She did not argue theology; she sang her love. She did not seek permission from priests or scholars; she followed her heart. This is devotion beyond doctrine—a spirituality rooted in experience rather than obedience. In agape across traditions, this principle warns against the hardening of love into law. Institutions are necessary, but they can calcify. When we make doctrine more important than the person before us, we betray love. Mirabai shows us that authentic devotion is wildly personal and cannot be managed by hierarchy. She did not reject her tradition but transcended its constraints through the force of her own lived experience. For agape to thrive across traditions, we must be willing to prioritize the actual encounter with the other person over the rules about how such encounter should proceed. Love is always more radical than the structures that try to contain it.
