Devotion Beyond Survival

A framework for committing to something greater than oneself when survival itself becomes uncertain, drawing on Mirabai's willingness to die for love.

Why It Matters

Mirabai devoted her life to Krishna even as her society condemned her, even as survival required conformity. She chose devotion over safety. Anticipatory grief often paralyzes us because we cling to survival as the highest good. Mirabai's example opens another possibility: devotion beyond survival. This doesn't mean seeking death, but rather organizing our lives around what we love rather than what we fear losing. When civilization contracts, the survival-focused life becomes fragile; the devotion-focused life becomes unshakeable. By dedicating ourselves to specific acts of beauty, justice, or love—not because they will "save" civilization but because they are worth doing—we transform anticipatory grief into purposeful engagement. Devotion becomes the container that holds us steady as certainties dissolve.
