Devotion Despite Absence

Mirabai never received Krishna's physical presence, never achieved her longing's resolution. Yet she deepened her devotion precisely because of the impossible yearning—not despite it. This is the practice of loving what we cannot possess, cannot guarantee, cannot control. For civilization's future, certainties have dissolved: we cannot guarantee stable climate, just institutions, cultural continuity, or intergenerational flourishing. Yet devotion to beauty, justice, knowledge, and connection does not require guarantees. It thrives in uncertainty. We love our children knowing they will suffer. We create art knowing it may be lost. We build communities knowing they will change. This is mature devotion—the love that does not need reciprocation, resolution, or proof of worth. Mirabai's path teaches that our commitment to civilization's flourishing becomes most authentic when freed from the demand that it succeed.
