Devotion as Infrastructure of Meaning

Mirabai's devotion was not a private feeling but a structured practice—daily rituals, disciplines, relationships, songs that created meaning independent of social validation. In a time when temples and authorities rejected her, her devotional infrastructure held. She had built something that systems could not contain or control. For anticipatory grief, this concept reframes the question: as institutions fail, what alternative infrastructure of meaning can we build? Devotion, in this sense, is not escapism but construction. We devote ourselves to relationships, practices, art, land, learning—ways of making meaning that do not require permission or certification from failing systems. This devotional infrastructure becomes the ground from which we grieve. We are not grieving from emptiness but from a practice-built fullness. Mirabai's practice teaches that meaning is not produced by civilization but by attention, love, and commitment. We can build devoted communities, devoted disciplines, devoted attention to what matters. These become the structures through which we weather transition and remain capable of hope.
