Dharma-Priya: Love Aligned with Life Purpose

The practice of subordinating romantic love to one's deeper calling and spiritual purpose as a boundary principle.

Why It Matters

Dharma-priya means loving according to one's dharma, one's true purpose and calling. Mirabai's dharma was devotion to Krishna and service to truth. Every relationship had to align with this or be released. She did not abandon love for duty; rather, she refused to let romantic love override her soul's purpose. This is revolutionary boundary-setting. Modern culture often tells us that romantic love should be our highest priority. Dharma-priya teaches that our relationship with truth, with our work, with our spiritual evolution, and with our deepest calling must come first. Relationships that demand we betray our dharma do not deserve us. Boundaries rooted in dharma-priya ask: Does this relationship support my life's purpose or undermine it? Does loving this person require me to abandon my truth? Can we grow together, or will one of us have to shrink? Mirabai shows that when we remain fiercely loyal to our dharma, we attract people capable of honoring our wholeness. Conversely, relationships built on compromising our purpose are built on sand and deserve the boundaries we place around them.
