Dissolution as Initiation Into Simplicity

Mirabai dissolved into Krishna; she died dancing, merged with what she loved. Her dissolution was not annihilation but transformation into union. Applied to civilization's anticipated contraction, dissolution can be understood as initiation rather than only tragedy. Many of civilization's systems—energy-intensive infrastructure, supply chains dependent on extraction, hierarchies requiring constant enforcement—are inherently unsustainable. Their dissolution, while genuinely mourned, also opens space for different possibilities: local knowledge, smaller-scale relationship, reduced consumption, renewed dependence on direct participation and community. This is not romanticizing hardship, which Mirabai never did. But she understood that loss can crack us open, revealing what was obscured by excess and complexity. Anticipatory grief that includes this dimension acknowledges: some of what we mourn losing was itself unsustainable and causing harm. As we grieve, we can simultaneously imagine and build the simpler, more regenerative ways that may emerge. Dissolution becomes the threshold between what was and what might be.
