The Question of Divine Absence

Engaging children's spiritual and existential questions about why loss happens, drawing on Mirabai's wrestling with divine mystery and faith.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai asked hard questions of the divine: Where are you? Why do you hide? How can I trust you if you bring such longing and pain? Rather than offering easy reassurance, this framework invites children to wrestle with the 'why' of their loss. Some children feel angry at God or the universe; others question meaning entirely. These questions are not failures of faith but deepening of it. Adults can create space for this questioning without needing to resolve it. A child might ask: Why did this person die? What happens after death? Is there meaning in this? These existential inquiries are part of grief work. Rather than shutting down these questions with platitudes, we can sit with the mystery alongside children, validate that some questions have no easy answers, and support them in developing their own evolving relationship to meaning, faith, and the unknowable.
