Divine Witness: Finding Worth Beyond Partnership

Establishing intrinsic value independent of partner validation, the foundation of secure attachment and healthy interdependence.

Why It Matters

For Mirabai, Krishna's presence (or apparent absence) did not determine her worth. She was seen and valued by the Divine, regardless of earthly recognition or reciprocation. This is the Divine Witness—an internalized sense of being fundamentally worthy, loved, and known. Insecure attachment often stems from a hollow core: the belief that worth must be earned through partner approval, that love is proof of value. Anxious partners desperately seek reassurance; avoidant partners reject intimacy to protect a fragile self-image. The Divine Witness practice (whether through spirituality, self-compassion, or community) establishes worth before partnership. You are already enough. Your partner cannot complete you because you are already whole. This reorientation is transformative: you choose partners to enhance, not validate, your existence. When selecting partners, this concept asks: Can you be alone and content? Do you love your partner for who they are, or for how they make you feel about yourself? Mirabai's example shows that secure attachment emerges when we feel witnessed and valued by something larger than romantic love, liberating us to love freely.
