The Examined Ego in Service of Love

Continuously investigating and releasing ego-driven needs for control, status, and validation that corrupt romantic attachment and intimacy.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai spent her life systematically releasing ego investments: status as a queen, family honor, sexual propriety, and the desire to be exclusively loved. This wasn't self-annihilation; it was radical clarification of what actually mattered. In attachment theory, ego often manifests as the need for your partner to reflect your preferred self-image, prioritize your needs above all else, or validate your worth. Anxious attachers often have ego invested in being needed. Avoidant attachers often have ego invested in being independent. Secure attachment requires becoming aware of these ego structures and consciously releasing them. This is ongoing work, not one-time achievement. The practice is to notice: When do I become defensive? When do I feel threatened? What story am I telling about what this means about me? Usually these moments signal ego activation. Mirabai's approach was to continuously offer her ego structures to the divine—essentially, to something larger than her small self. In secular terms, this might mean offering your ego patterns to your partner's wellbeing, to the relationship's authentic evolution, or to your own spiritual maturation. It means saying: I notice I'm trying to control this outcome because I'm afraid of looking foolish. I notice I'm withdrawing because my ego feels threatened. I'm going to release this and show up authentically instead. This examined ego becomes increasingly permeable and less tyrannical.
