The Freedom of Letting Go

A practice of deliberate release that liberates energy from defending the past or controlling the future.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's renunciation—of marriage, property, reputation, family obligation—was experienced as freedom, not sacrifice. She was not grim about it but joyful in the lightness of having fewer claims. Anticipatory grief for civilization often gets stuck in resistance: fighting to preserve, to prevent, to control outcomes. The Freedom of Letting Go invites a different orientation. What are we gripping that exhausts us? What defenses drain our aliveness? By consciously releasing attachment to specific futures or versions of how things should be, we free energy for presence, creativity, and adaptation. This is not passive acceptance but active simplification—choosing what to hold and what to release. Paradoxically, the willingness to lose everything becomes the source of genuine agency and peace.
