Freedom as the Prerequisite for Devotion

Mirabai's life was a radical enactment of prioritizing spiritual freedom over social obligation, family duty, and conventional respectability. She abandoned her marriage, renounced her rank, and lived as a wandering ascetic—choices that were incomprehensible and scandalous in 16th-century Rajasthan. This concept argues that beneath much unexamined rage lies the suppressed knowledge that we are living inauthentically, bound by obligations that contradict our deepest values. The rage is not primarily at external circumstances but at our own complicity in our imprisonment. Mirabai teaches that freedom is not a luxury or selfish indulgence but the prerequisite for genuine devotion and authentic feeling. We cannot truly grieve or love or even know our own rage while we are performing a false self for others. Her example suggests that some of the anger underneath is the soul's insistence on liberation. Examining this concept invites the hard question: Where am I unfree? What would I lose if I chose authenticity? What rage is actually the voice of my freedom calling?
