Freedom as Clarified Purpose

Mirabai chose freedom, but not as license or detachment. She left her marriage and caste-bound life to serve something she found more compelling: direct relationship with the sacred. Her freedom was radical commitment, not refusal of commitment. This reclaims "freedom" from libertarian oversimplification. In anticipatory grief for civilization, we face a similar choice: genuine freedom is not pretending the future is secure, nor is it paralyzed resignation. It is clarity about what we actually value and recommitment to it despite uncertainty. When we grieve civilization, we are partly grieving the illusion of permanent security that constrained our choices. Freedom emerges in its dissolution. We become free to: invest in local resilience over abstract growth, prioritize regeneration over extraction, choose integrity over convenience, build relationships over accumulation. This freedom is not lighter than our old illusions; it is heavier with responsibility. But it is also truer, and truth—Mirabai teaches—makes us more fully alive. Civilizational grief, paradoxically, is the door to this authentic liberation.
