Mirabai's love for Krishna was absolute, yet she refused to be defined solely through that devotion. She maintained her own spiritual practice, her own voice, her own relationship with the divine. Freedom Within Devotion addresses the false choice between belonging and autonomy that many lovers face. Cultural narratives suggest that true love requires self-erasure—that mature love means merging identity, subordinating need, and defining yourself through the other person. Mirabai's example suggests a different possibility: radical commitment that includes radical freedom. In modern relationships, this concept matters because codependency often disguises itself as love. True communication in love requires the ability to say: I am devoted to us AND I need time alone. I love you deeply AND I have aspirations separate from our partnership. I choose you AND I maintain my own spiritual/creative/professional path. Communicating this balance requires particular skill because saying "I need freedom" in a relationship often triggers abandonment fears. Freedom Within Devotion teaches that you can communicate autonomy as an enrichment of the relationship rather than a threat to it. When you maintain your own aliveness, creativity, and self-knowledge, you bring more authentic presence to partnership. The communication practice is naming both commitments simultaneously: "I'm devoted to us, which is exactly why I need to pursue this separate path." This prevents the resentment that comes from self-abandonment disguised as love.
