The Heart's Authority Beyond Institutions

Mirabai's defiance was rooted in direct knowing: she had experienced the presence of Krishna; no priest, no scripture, no social authority could contradict what her heart knew to be true. This gave her an unshakeable center even as every external authority opposed her. As anticipatory grief for civilization unfolds, institutions—government, media, expertise, academia—are increasingly questioned or delegitimized. In this vacuum, the examined heart becomes essential navigation. We cannot rely on institutions to tell us what to grieve, what to value, or how to act. We must develop faith in our own direct perception: What do we actually feel? What do we love? What does integrity require of us? This is not anti-intellectual but post-institutional. It means combining rigorous thinking with embodied knowing, reason with heart-truth. Mirabai could read scripture and sing it, but her authority came from lived experience of the divine. Similarly, we can consume information and analysis, but our real guide must be what we know through presence, relationship, and sustained attention. The heart's authority becomes civilizational intelligence when many hearts align around shared truth.
