Love Without Proof or Guarantee

Mirabai loved Krishna without guarantee that he would return her love, without proof of his existence beyond her own experience, without assurance of happiness or reward. This is the radical act at the heart of agape: loving without the security of reciprocation or outcome. In a world that teaches us to calculate risk and protect our investments, this seems foolish. Yet this is precisely where unconditional love lives. Agape loves the stranger, the enemy, the one who does not return love, because the beloved's response is irrelevant to the lover's commitment. This requires extraordinary faith—not faith in the other but faith in love itself, in its capacity to transform both giver and receiver. Mirabai's devotion teaches that we do not earn the right to love or wait for certainty before opening our hearts. Instead, we practice faith as an active stance: the decision to love fully, to believe in the redemptive power of love, to offer it even when outcomes are uncertain. This is the courage that agape demands.
