Prema and False Self-Love

Prema is divine love that sees clearly and accepts fully; examining which versions of self-love were authentic devotion versus conditional performance for external approval.

Why It Matters

Prema in bhakti means love without condition, without transaction. Mirabai's radical act was loving Krishna completely while refusing to perform the role of dutiful wife that society demanded. This distinction illuminates identity grief: much of your former self may have been built on conditional self-love—loving yourself if you achieved, pleased others, fit the role. Prema asks: which parts of your old identity did you genuinely love, and which did you perform love for? The grief intensifies when you realize some of what you lost wasn't actually you but rather the person you had to be to survive or belong. Prema-based inquiry helps you separate authentic loss from liberation. You can grieve the genuine gifts of your former self while simultaneously recognizing that other parts were obligations you've now freed yourself from. This nuance prevents both false recovery and false self-rejection.
