Prema: Love Beyond Obligation

Distinguishing between love freely chosen and love performed out of duty, expectation, or fear of abandonment.

Mira
Why It Matters

In bhakti philosophy, prema represents love that flows spontaneously from the heart without coercion, expectation, or social obligation. It is love for love's sake, not love as transaction or duty. Many relationships suffer from confused categories: partners mistake obligation for chemistry, or perform compatibility because leaving feels impossible. Mirabai abandoned social expectations—marriage, caste, propriety—to honor her authentic prema for the divine. She refused to perform a compatible wife; she chose authentic love instead. This concept asks: Are you loving this person freely, or are you bound by fear, obligation, guilt, or sunk time? Can you imagine leaving, and if the thought brings only relief rather than genuine grief, what does that signal? Prema cannot be forced or manufactured through effort. Chemistry involves willing, joyful presence; compatibility often masks reluctant duty.
