Radical Freedom Through Grief

Understanding how grief can liberate children from illusions about permanence and control, opening them to authentic living.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai rejected conventional expectations of her role, family duty, and social position in pursuit of genuine spiritual truth. Loss teaches children a similar liberation: the world cannot be controlled, and fighting against reality causes suffering. Grief, while devastating, reveals what truly matters and who we authentically are beneath social performance. Supporting young people through loss means helping them recognize that some things cannot be fixed, prevented, or bargained with—and this acceptance paradoxically brings freedom. Children who grieve deeply often shed pretense and superficiality earlier than peers. They may feel alienated, but they also access a kind of wisdom about authenticity. Mirabai's freedom came through surrendering to what she could not control. Grieving children, guided with compassion, can discover that moving through loss strengthens their capacity to live truthfully and resist false comforts.
