Samadhi-Prema: Unity Consciousness as Love

In states of samadhi (absorption), Mirabai experienced the dissolution of separation between self and beloved; this teaches that agape ultimately arises from recognizing non-duality.

Why It Matters

Samadhi is the state of complete absorption or unity consciousness where the boundary between subject and object, lover and beloved, self and divine dissolves. Though it is not the goal of bhakti (which honors the sweet difference between lover and beloved), samadhi-prema represents a profound realization: that at the deepest level, there is no fundamental separation. Mirabai's poetry suggests moments where she experienced this non-dual consciousness—where she and Krishna were one, not two. This concept provides the philosophical ground for unconditional agape across traditions: if separation is ultimately illusory, then love of the 'other' is love of one's own deepest self. Discrimination between 'us' and 'them,' 'our tradition' and 'their tradition' loses its absolute force. This does not demand that we erase legitimate differences or deny the unique beauty of each path, but it reveals that beneath the differences lies a shared essence. Samadhi-prema teaches that the highest agape arises not from moral effort alone but from profound realization of our ultimate non-separation. Practices that cultivate samadhi—deep meditation, contemplative silence, selfless service—gradually reveal this truth.
