Satsang: Truth-Telling in Community

The power of speaking truth in trustworthy community to break isolation, shame, and the silence that allows affairs and broken trust to persist.

Why It Matters

Satsang—communion of truth seekers, gathering in the presence of truth—was central to Mirabai's spiritual practice and her liberation from isolation. In affairs and broken trust, the deepest harm often grows in silence and secrecy. Shame keeps people isolated: the betrayed partner tells no one, fearing judgment; the unfaithful partner carries the secret alone; both remain trapped in a toxic story they cannot question. Satsang invites a different path: finding trustworthy witnesses—a therapist, a spiritual guide, a small circle of truthful friends—and speaking openly about what happened. This breaks the spell of secrecy and shame. In community, the story can be examined from multiple perspectives. The heart can be witnessed and held. Mirabai's poetry was itself a form of satsang—she spoke her truth publicly, and others found liberation in her witness. Healing from betrayal requires moving from isolation to truth-telling community.
