Separation as Portal, Not Prison

Mirabai was separated from her family, her position, her expected life—and this separation became the condition of her liberation and most authentic poetry. In civilizational anticipatory grief, separation can function similarly: the recognition that we are already separated from futures we assumed we would inherit creates space for clearer seeing. When we stop investing energy in defending what is disappearing, we access different kinds of truth. Separation grief is harsh, but it clarifies. It removes the false comfort of denial. Mirabai's songs poured from her separation; they would not have existed without loss. This framework suggests that anticipatory grief, properly held, can generate unexpected creative and spiritual clarity about what we actually value and who we actually are.
