Seva: Love Enacted as Service

Mirabai practiced seva not as obligation but as the natural overflow of her love for the divine and for all beings. She served the temple, the poor, the diseased, and the forgotten. Seva transforms agape from feeling into practice, making unconditional love tangible and testable. Service, in this tradition, is not condescending charity but the recognition that the beloved's welfare is inseparable from one's own. When we perform seva across traditions—serving communities different from our own, caring for strangers' needs, working for justice in systems that do not directly benefit us—we embody agape in the world. Seva requires presence, attention, and the willingness to meet actual human beings rather than abstractions. It is the antidote to performative love and the proof of genuine commitment. Through seva, we learn that unconditional love is not primarily about how we feel but about how we show up and what we give. The practice grounds agape in lived reality and shared vulnerability.
