Seva: Love Expressed Through Selfless Service

Mirabai's love for Krishna overflowed into service to others: she was known for her generosity, her presence to the suffering, her willingness to move beyond social boundaries to help. Seva translates this into a celibate framework where love is expressed through action rather than sexual intimacy. In celibate relationships or solo celibacy, seva becomes the daily practice of serving your partner, family, community, or spiritual community without expectation of reciprocal reward. This might mean cooking, listening, teaching, caregiving, or creative labor offered freely. Seva prevents celibacy from becoming self-focused or spiritually bypassing, grounding it instead in concrete responsiveness to others' needs. It also addresses a common fear: that celibacy means isolation or emotional starvation. Instead, seva creates a web of interdependence and mutual care where love circulates through action, not just feeling. This transforms celibacy into a relational practice rather than an individual achievement.
