The Unchosen Lineage of Witness

We did not choose to be born into this moment of civilizational precarity, just as Mirabai did not choose to be born a woman in a rigid caste system. Yet both became witnesses to their time and transmitters of wisdom beyond it. The examined heart recognizes that anticipatory grief is the price of consciousness in this era. We carry the achievements of all previous generations—art, love, knowledge, struggle—and we will likely witness their diminishment. This is not a punishment but a lineage. Mirabai inherited the bhakti tradition and transformed it. We inherit civilization's beauty and fragility and are called to witness both. This witnessing has weight and responsibility. We cannot escape it without abandoning our humanity. The unchosen lineage demands that we show up, that we see clearly, that we transmit what matters to whoever comes after. It is grief and privilege intertwined.
