Virahini Consciousness: Love and Absence

The state of longing in separation (virahini) as a framework for holding love and loss simultaneously without resolving the tension.

Why It Matters

Virahini—the state of being a woman in separation from her beloved—is central to Mirabai's poetry and spiritual practice. She lived in that gap between presence and absence, celebrating the ache itself as proof of love. Virahini consciousness, applied to civilization, asks us to inhabit the tension between what we love about our world and what we are losing. We do not resolve this into either false hope or despair. Instead, we stay present in the bittersweet reality: we love the internet, cities, and systems we have built while grieving the costs—ecological, social, psychological—they exact. This is not indecision but mature heartbreak. Virahini consciousness teaches that longing itself is a spiritual state, a way of remaining awake and alive to what matters. It permits us to grieve while continuing to build, to feel loss while taking action, to acknowledge absence while celebrating presence.
