Vismarana, sacred forgetting, is the active practice of releasing the past from your consciousness—not denial, but deliberate mental release. Mirabai could have dwelled on her family's cruelty, her husband's coldness, or society's judgment. Instead, she chose to forget these grievances, not through suppression but through redirection of her attention to her beloved and her devotional practice. Vismarana acknowledges that rumination is a choice, grievance a habit, and the past a place we can choose to visit less frequently. In relationships with boundaries, vismarana is essential: we release stored injuries that burden the present, we stop rehearsing old narratives of betrayal, and we consciously withdraw our attention from what no longer serves us. This frees cognitive and emotional energy for what matters now. Vismarana is not forgetting what someone did; it is releasing obsessive focus on it. When someone betrays trust, vismarana might mean: I remember what happened, I have learned from it, and I now place my attention elsewhere. This selective amnesia is a radical act of self-protection and freedom.
