How is my life entangled with this animal's suffering? What world am I participating in by making this choice? What would reciprocal relationship look like? These aren't rhetorical questions but genuine inquiries that shift depending on context and knowledge. Nasreddin's tradition teaches that most ethical failures come from answers arrived at too quickly, without adequate questioning. The animal ethics movement often falls into this trap: we know the answer (stop eating meat), so we stop questioning. But real change happens when we remain genuinely curious, when we ask what we don't know, when we're willing to be confused and to learn from that confusion. This practice of sustained questioning itself becomes transformative.
