Why It Matters

Citta vritti—the fluctuations or modifications of the mind—are the constant stream of thoughts, emotions, and beliefs that color perception. Patanjali's yoga begins with observing these patterns without judgment. In attachment relationships, unexamined vritti create reactivity: catastrophic thinking ('they don't love me'), rumination on perceived slights, or avoidant thoughts ('I don't need anyone'). By cultivating witness consciousness, you observe these mental patterns as they arise without being swept away by them. A partner says they need space; the anxious mind immediately creates the story 'they're leaving me.' With vritti awareness, you notice the thought, recognize it as a pattern, and choose a grounded response. This practice builds psychological flexibility—the capacity to feel emotions while responding wisely. Awareness of your citta vritti reveals how attachment wounds produce habitual thought loops that sabotage relationships.
