Klesa Patterns in Political Ideology

Patanjali identifies five klesa (afflictions)—avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego-sense), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death)—that create suffering and delusion. These five patterns brilliantly explain the psychology underlying political rigidity and tribal identity. Avidya manifests as false certainties about how the world works, preventing learning from contradictory evidence. Asmita appears as identification with political faction, where criticism of policies becomes experienced as personal attack. Raga shows as desperate clinging to familiar worldviews and leaders. Dvesha appears as visceral rejection of opposing views without genuine understanding. Abhinivesha manifests as existential fear that opposing political views threaten survival and identity. Understanding these patterns in oneself and others transforms political psychology. Rather than viewing opponents as simply evil or stupid, we recognize how shared human afflictions drive all political behavior. This recognition creates compassion without naïveté—clear-eyed understanding that liberates consciousness from klesa-driven reactivity. Political transformation becomes possible when individuals recognize how these patterns operate within themselves. Leaders examining their asmita and raga become more adaptable; citizens recognizing their avidya and dvesha engage more authentically.
