Sakshibhava is the practice of developing witness consciousness—the capacity to observe your mental processes as a detached witness rather than from within them. This is the central practice for transforming cognitive distortions. When a distortion arises—"I'm not smart enough," "Everyone judges me"—sakshibhava invites you to notice: "There is a thought arising. The mind is generating this story." This subtle shift from "I believe this is true" to "I'm observing this thought" creates tremendous freedom. The witness is untouched by distortions; it remains clear and stable regardless of mental turbulence. By repeatedly practicing sakshibhava in meditation and daily life, you strengthen the witness. This creates a reliable place within you that is not trapped by distortions. Distortions continue to arise, but they no longer define your reality or drive your choices. Patanjali's entire system leads to the establishment of sakshibhava—the unshakeable awareness that observes all mental phenomena without being diminished or captured by them.
